Interview Coaching – Advice on interview preparation
Interview Coaching Question: I was recently let go from my job of and am now facing interviews for the first time in 15 years. The good news is that I’m getting interviews, but I’m terrified of them. Can you give me some advice?
Interviews can be a daunting event for many job seekers. Effective preparation can greatly improve your confidence, performance and your results. You need to take a systematic approach to interview preparation, focusing on two key areas: (a) what you are going to say at interview (your message) and (b) how you say it (communicating your message).
Knowing what you’ll say at interview will improve confidence. To achieve this, you must address the following points. You must clearly understand customer requirements. This will help you deliver a focused message, and help you articulate relevant skills, experience and supporting examples. You must also know your product, which means being familiar with your CV.
How you communicate your message is also essential for interview success. 93% of communications is non-verbal, which means your body language, tone of voice and energy play a critical role. You should consider doing mock interviews or role plays. Get feedback where possible and work on identified improvement areas.
You should take confidence from the fact that you are securing interviews. Believe in yourself and your ability. Employers obviously like what they see on your CV and interviews generated to date is confirmation of this. Prepare thoroughly and focus on the positives, as fears and the images we create in our minds never materialise. Remember, most employers want interviewees to perform well, so that they can make a hire, solve their problem and get back to their day job. Best of luck with your interviews.
